My Friend of Misery

I absolutely love Metallica, the Black Album in particular. One of the songs that has always resonated with me, and made me consider it’s meaning is My Friend Of Misery. I’ve included the lyrics complete at the bottom of this post, so if you want to read them before I break them down, scroll to the bottom and they are there. I have also included a link to a recording if you haven’t heard the song before. I think the reason this song has made me think so much, is that at times, I can often be a quite negative,…

IM50 – What is it about

IM50 is a community of people who are a stage of life where many significant changes can occur. Changes such as Children finishing their education and moving out Milestone birthdays such as 40 or 50, or 60 Retirement Parents passing away Divorce In my case, I am 46, very overweight, and have recently gone through a divorce. I have had to do a lot of work over the last year realigning my vision for the future. Much of what I had committed my life towards, buying the family home, renovating, landscaping it, and building the ideal family life has disappeared…

What is this all about?

“I have gathered a posse of other men’s flowers and nothing but the threads that binds them is my own” This was written by Montaigne, but I got it from An Anthology of Poetry that I found in a second hand bookstore many years ago called “Other Mens Flowers” . The compiler was Field-Marshal Viscount Wavell, who fought in the Boer War, and World War 1, ending up at his retirement as Viceroy of India. He was certainly a product of another time, when reading poetry was probably akin to watching unbox, or cat video’s on Youtube. In his words,…

The Greatest Show on Earth

Before I get into the meaning of the lyrics that caught me in this song, let me fan boy for a couple of minutes. I am new to the band Nightwish, and they are completely amazing. The quality of the composition is mind blowing, and the production of their live performances has rocketed going to one of their concerts to near the top of my post Covid bucket list. What do you expect when you couple Symphonic Metal with the Uilleann Pipes, low whistle, and a couple of the most amazing vocalists I have ever heard. I've put a link…

Human Centric Lighting and Sleep

I was reading the book Why We Sleep by Matt Walker earlier this year, and I found it fascinating to see how severe the impact of poor sleep can be on creativity, problem solving, decision making, productivity, learning and memory. These factors all have an impact on our work performance, and good workplace design should be focused on increasing all of these. In addition to these work related factors, sleep also has a significant impact on other health areas such as cardio-vascular health, brain health, immune system, and even longevity. Parts of the book dealt with Circadian rhythm, and touched…

Disturbed by the Sound of Silence

I first became aware of the song  The Sounds of Silence during a discussion with a friend about songs where there was a cover that was vastly superior to the original. I think I had heard the Simon and Garfunkel version but it never registered. Their music was not really my thing. Funnily enough, I had never listened to the band Disturbed either. I watched the recording on YouTube of them performing the song live on the Conan O'Brien show, and it blew my mind. I think that performance is one of the best live vocal performances I have seen.…

My experience of doing a 5 Day water only fast

As someone who has spent most of my life morbidly obese, Christmas has always been a challenging time. I seem to have been trying to lose weight my whole life, and the festive season, with it’s multitude of social occasions, plentiful food and drink and apparent license to over indulge has always been a bitter sweet time. I could spend the previous 2 months losing 5 or 6kg, and then in the space of a couple of days, pack on another 8kg.  I decided this year I would try something different. I have tried many different types of eating, from…

What is an equivalent output?

At Interglo, we specialise in the value management of project lighting packages. I discussed our approach to this in my previous article “Finding the sweet spot in lighting”.  While we see “or approved equivalent” as an opportunity, we also take it as a responsibility to make sure we do our research to ensure the products we propose are truly an equivalent product. In this article, I want to specifically look at the term “output”. "What output", or what “brightness” are questions we get asked often. Unfortunately, in the age of LED Lighting this is not always a simple answer. Historically,…

Finding the sweet spot in lighting

The lighting package is a significant capital investment in any building project, regardless of whether it is Commercial, Industrial, Retail or Hospitality. There are a number of conflicting considerations in putting together a lighting package, and these can differ significantly as a project progresses from the initial documentation stages, through to the construction and commissioning stage. Central to findinding the sweet spot in lighting, is the concept of maximising value. As lighting designers, we would all like to use the best fitting for a given application, but in many cases, the fitting that represents the best value is what will…

R-IF-fing on Kipling

I first found this poem in the Other Mens Flowers anthology. I believe that Kipling wrote it as advice to his son on how he should live his life. I really like the way the poem is structured. The way it suggests a virtue, and then the scenario that will require that virtue. ie. take a panadol…if you have a headache. I have wanted to write about this poem for some time, to really beak it down to see why it resonates with me so strongly. I have presented the poem in its entirety at the end of this post…

Not my first dance

While moving from where I am now in terms of fitness to finishing an Ironman Triathlon seems a long stretch, this is not my first time doing this. It is not the first time I have been this fat and unfit (I have been worse), and it is not the first time I have set fitness goals and achieved them.  When I got married in 2001, I weighed around 146kg. I knew I needed to do something about it, so set a goal of running the Melbourne marathon. I did this in 2003, completing the race in 4hrs 31 minutes.…

A Spoon full of Oil – The Secret of Happiness?

I recently listened to the audiobook of the The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I had not read the book itself, but the audio book was fantastic. I was struck by a particular metaphor , which I have quoted below (in italics). Following on from my post on Greta Thunberg, and our obsession with money and economic growth, I thought this was topical. "A merchant sent his son to learn the Secret of Happiness from the wisest of men. The young man wandered through the desert for forty days until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain.…
